UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley has begun the process of filling his coaching staff with the hiring of Tom Moore as assistant coach.
Moore spent the past year on Hurley’s staff at the University of Rhode Island, following 10 seasons as the head coach at Quinnipiac University. Prior to that, Moore spent 13 years on the coaching staff of UConn Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, the last two seasons as associate head coach.
“Tom’s coaching experience overall, but especially his association with UConn, will be a tremendous asset as we start this journey,” Hurley said. “His strong, longtime ties to high school and AAU programs in New England and throughout the Northeast are invaluable as we try to recruit talented student-athletes of high character. Tom was a big part of the success we enjoyed this past season and I’m confident we can bring the same kind of enthusiasm and excitement to Storrs. I’m delighted to have him join the staff.”
“I’m really thrilled to have the opportunity to join Dan and return to UConn,” Moore said. “Since I first arrived here in the fall of 1994, having the good fortune to work under a Hall of Fame coach in Jim Calhoun, UConn basketball has always been extremely special to me. The fact that I’m returning here with one of the bright, young college coaches in the country makes it even more exciting.”
Before Moore helped Rhode Island pile up 26 wins, an Atlantic 10 regular-season title and a second straight NCAA Tournament berth last season, he earned 162 victories in 10 seasons at Quinnipiac.
Moore led the Bobcats to four 20-win seasons, five national postseason berths, coached six All-Conference First Team selections, and was named CollegeInsider.com Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 2009, Jim Phelan NEC Coach of the Year in 2010, and to the New England Baketball Hall of Fame in 2013. In addition, Quinnipiac earned the NABC Team Excellence Award with a 3.2 collective team GPA for the 2013-14 season.
During his 13 seasons at UConn, Moore helped build the Huskies into a national power and played an important part in bringing the Huskies the 1999 and 2004 NCAA National Championships. Moore also helped lead UConn to a 340-99 overall record in the 13 seasons, as well as eight Big East regular-season titles, five Big East tournament crowns, and 12 straight national postseason tournament bids (1995-2006).
Prior to joining the staff at UConn, Moore served as the head coach at Worcester State College for five seasons (1989-94). At the time of his appointment there, he became the youngest (24) head coach of a collegiate program in New England and he eventually took his team to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Moore also has coaching experience as an assistant at Division II Assumption College (1988-89) and Worcester State (1987-88).
A 1987 graduate of Boston University, Moore and his wife, Eileen, have three daughters, Elizabeth Rose, Catherine Grace, and Caroline Mary.
