The Albany State Department Athletics has hired Michael D. Moore to serve as the interim head coach for the Rams’ Men’s Basketball program during the 2014-2015 season.
“We are pleased that coach Moore has agreed to lead our men’s basketball program for this season,” Dr. Richard H. Williams, ASU Athletics Director, said. “He has proven success and experience in our conference and on the national level, and we feel he will have a positive influence on our student-athletes.”
An Albany State alum, Moore served as the head men’s basketball coach at Fort Valley State University from 1993-2004. During his tenure, he led the Wildcats to 1998 SIAC tournament championship and a first round appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament. FVSU also garnered runner-up finishes during the 2000 and 2001 SIAC tournaments.
“I am serving at the pleasure of ASU president Dr. Arthur Dunning, the athletics administration, the student-athletes, making sure they graduate and win games, the alumni and this great institution that has given me so much,” Moore said. “I am willing to be a servant and do whatever needs to be done to make sure this venture is a great success.
Moore was named the Georgia NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, the SIAC Coach of the Year and the SIAC Coach of the Tournament during the 1997-1998 season. Before heading to Fort Valley State, Moore was the top assistant at Georgia Southwestern University. He was a part of two NAIA GIAC championship teams and a member of a staff that led a 1989-1990 team (the first Georgia team to win 30 games in a regular season) a 31-2 record.
