The Mount Ida College men’s basketball team, under the direction of first year Head Coach Ben Davis, is excited to announce the three assistant coaches that will work with the Mustangs during the upcoming season. Two of these coaches, Kevin Seetal and Brian Cerone, are new to the program, while Jaykyri Simpson will return for his third year on the bench.
"I feel very fortunate to have such a great group of coaches working alongside me," said Davis. "Their character, outstanding work ethic, and knowledge of the game will be extremely helpful in moving this program forward in a positive direction."
Jaykyri Simpson will begin his third season as an Assistant Coach for the Mount Ida College men’s basketball team and will also work as a full-time employee in the Admissions office as a Retention Coordinator.
Most recently, Simpson was the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for Division III member the University of New England (UNE) since 2009. Simpson was involved in all aspects of the team’s operation including recruiting, practice planning, game operation, fundraising, individual workouts for players and all on-and-off the court duties for the Nor’Easters. Simpson has been involved in numerous summer basketball camps to aid and help develop strong basketball talent around the region as well.
Simpson’s playing resume is impressive, as he is a two-time first team All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) player at UNE from 2007-2009. Simpson led the Nor’Easters to a regular season and CCC post-season tournament championship back in 2008-2009 and was named Defensive Player-of-the-Year for the CCC that same year.
Simpson is a 2009 graduate of the University of New England with a Bachelor’s in Sports Management and a minor in Business. This past July, he received his Master’s degree at St. Joseph’s College (ME) in Business Administration specializing in Leadership. Simpson is a coach-in-residence at the College as well.
Coach Davis: "Jaykyri has extensive experience as a player and coach, and aids our basketball program in countless ways on a daily basis. In addition to being a great resource for our players and coaching staff, I have relied on him heavily to bring new ideas and initiatives to the team as we move forward. Jaykyri is an extremely bright and passionate coach, who I have a tremendous amount of trust and respect for. He will continue to play an extremely important role in the future of our program."
Kevin Seetal begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Mount Ida College men’s basketball team.
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Seetal grew up in Western Massachusetts and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a minor in Kinesiology.
He has spent the last five years as a basketball coach at Division 1 Northhampton High School, who he helped lead to a Western Massachusetts championship and the state semi-finals in 2011. Seetal also coached for two Western Massachusetts AAU Programs (Drive Hoops in 2013 and Jaguars in 2011-12).
Coach Davis: "Kevin has been a tireless worker in all aspects of our program since he was hired on staff. He has tremendous work ethic as a coach, and has demonstrated an exceptional ability to teach the game of basketball. His efforts as a mentor to our current players and recruiter of future student-athletes to the program have already exceeded my expectations and I am confident he will continue to drive both of these efforts forward in a successful manner. I am very excited about having him with me on staff, and helping him achieve his goals as a collegiate coach."
Brian Cerone joins the Mount Ida men’s basketball staff in Fall of 2013 for his first year as an assistant coach.
A former assistant coach at Hanover High School, Cerone helped his alma mater to two Division III state tournament appearances. To date, he currently serves as a geometry teacher at the BB Russell School in Brockton, Massachusetts.
Cerone, who played two seasons at Wheaton College in Norton, helped the Lyons to an ECAC Championship and an appearance in the NEWMAC championship game.
In high school, Cerone was a standout player both on and off the court. Cerone was a 1,000 point scorer and was named a Brockton Enterprise All-Scholastic team honoree twice.
In 2009, he graduated from UMass Boston with a bachelor’s degree in Economics, while most recently he earned a master’s degree in Secondary Education from Endicott College.
Coach Davis: "Brian and I have known each other for a long time, and I have great respect for him as a person and coach. I feel very privileged to have him on our coaching staff and am confident that he will aid the program in numerous areas. His previous coaching experience will pay immediate dividends for our team, and I am excited to be able to rely on him in all of our important decision-making that comes with helping move the program forward in a positive direction."
