Former professional basketball player Sherman Rivers has been named as an assistant coach for the Mount Olive College men’s basketball team, it was announced by Trojan head coach Joey Higginbotham. Rivers’ primary duties include serving as recruiting coordinator academic coordinator, as well as post player development and scouting opponents. He joins fellow first-year assistant Justin Griffith on this year’s coaching staff.
Rivers spent seven years playing professional basketball overseas, playing for teams in three European countries. He played for the BKJH Lions and BK Sadska in the Czech Republic, as well as the Sheffield Sharks and MK Lions in England. Rivers also played for Academica in Portugal.
Rivers comes to Mount Olive from Woodbridge, Va., where he coached basketball at the high school and club levels. Rivers spent the previous two years as assistant coach of the Potomac Senior High School varsity boys’ basketball team and head coach of the school’s junior varsity team. He also served as head coach and manager of the VA Assault Boys’ Basketball U-16 team.
Rivers was a four-year letterwinner and three-year team captain at William and Mary. He finished his collegiate career ranked fourth in school history in games played.
