Moynihan named DBO at George Mason

George Mason men’s basketball head coach Paul Hewitt announced Mike Moynihan has been named the director of operations for the program.

Moynihan joins the staff after a one-year stint as the video coordinator at Troy University last season. While with the Trojans, Moynihan was responsible for all aspects of video editing and exchange, recruiting organization, academic advising and social networking.

Prior to his time at Troy, Moynihan served as an assistant coach at Division II Young Harris College where he helped the Mountain Lions to a 17-9 record in 2012-13 and a second place finish in the Western Division. His responsibilities at Young Harris included recruiting, scouting/game planning, skill development, travel operations, film exchange and academic advising. He recruited Isaiah Johnson who was named Second Team All-Peach Belt and Georgia Basketball Coach’s Association (GBCA) First Team and Newcomer of the Year.

Before joining Young Harris, Moynihan spent one year as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, The University of North Georgia. Moynihan got his coaching start in the 2010-11 season as an assistant coach at Buford High School in Buford, Ga., helping lead the team to a Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class AA State Championship appearance with a 24-8 overall record.

His stint at Buford High School followed a successful four-year playing career that concluded with All-Peach Belt honors at North Georgia in 2009-10. Moynihan averaged 14.4 points and 4.7 assists per game that season, his second with the Saints after spending the first two seasons of his career at Georgia State. Moynihan walked on to the Georgia State basketball team as a freshman and worked his way into starting the final six games of his sophomore season, averaging 12.0 points and 4.0 assists per game over those starts.

Moynihan received his bachelor’s degree in management from North Georgia College and State University in 2010. He is the grandson of Charles “Lefty” Driesell.
