Muchnick Hired as NYU Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach

David Muchnick has been added to the New York University men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach, it was announced by Head Coach Dagan Nelson on Thursday, May 30.

Muchnick, who brings 15 years of Division III coaching experience to NYU, joins the Violets’ staff after two seasons on the staff at John Jay College. Before serving as an assistant for the Bloodhounds, Muchnick was the head coach at Maine Maritime Academy for three seasons.

“Having known David on a personal and professional level for more than a decade, his ability to build relationships and connect with people is exceptional,” said Nelson. “David’s experience working at elite Division III institutions will pay major dividends for our program. He will be a wonderful role model for our current and future student-athletes. We are excited to add him to our staff!”

In addition to his time at John Jay and Maine Maritime, Muchnick also coached at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (2010-14), Denison University (2008-10) and SUNY Cortland (2005-08).

“I’ve known Dagan for almost half my life and it’s one of the main reasons why I’m here as I respect what he’s started to build,” said Muchnick. “We played against NYU last season and I was able to see how hard it was to scout his team. As a Long Island native, the name of NYU was always something I looked upon as prestigious, even at a national level. I look forward to building relationships and helping move this program forward towards a championship level. I am thrilled to be here!”

Muchnick is a 2005 graduate of SUNY Geneseo, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in communications. He played four seasons of basketball for the Knights and served as a team captain as a senior. Additionally, Muchnick earned a Master of Science degree in sports management from SUNY Cortland in 2009.
