Mugar Joins Caltech Men’s Basketball Staff

Peter Mugar has been named as the lead assistant for the Caltech men’s basketball program. Mugar’s primary roles include coordinating the Beavers’ defense, advanced scouting of opponents, practice and game preparation, on-the-floor coaching, and game-related tasks.

“We are very fortunate to add Coach Mugar to our staff,” Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger said.  “I’ve known him for more than twenty years and he’s always had a passion for basketball.  It’s rare for a program to acquire such an experienced teacher of the game as an assistant.”

Mugar comes to the Beavers after serving as the head coach at Framingham State University in Massachusetts where he guided the Rams to the MASCAC Tournament in three of his four years.

Prior to Framingham State, he served one year as the associate head coach at fellow MASCAC member institution Salem State University.  The Vikings won the league and secured the top seed in the conference tournament with a 17-9 overall mark, and a 9-3 record in league play.  Mugar formulated and implemented the Vikings’ defensive philosophy, assisted with in-game management, managed the scouting of opponents, and assisted with the recruitment of potential student-athletes.

Mugar spent five seasons as the associate head coach at Clark University.  Mugar was in charge of the Cougars’ defense and the team saw its points per game allowed in conference contests drop by more than 10 points.  Mugar helped guide the Cougars to the 2010 NEWMAC Tournament Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship where they advanced to the second round.

Mugar also previously was an assistant at Wentworth Institute of Technology and Babson College.  While he was an assistant at Cambridge Ringe and Latin High School, the Falcons captured the 2001 Division I Massachusetts State Championship and a USA Today national ranking with a 24-1 mark.

Like Coach Eslinger, Mugar is a graduate of Clark University where he played on both the basketball and baseball teams.
