NAIA Cal Maritime opens as Bross becomes assistant at D2 Cal State San Bernardino

CSUSB men’s basketball head coach Gus Argenal and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the hiring of Tim Bross as its new men’s basketball assistant coach. Bross comes to Cal State San Bernardino from Cal State Maritime Academy, where he has been the head coach since October of 2020. During his time coaching the Keelhaulers, Bross led the program to an overall record of 26-25 and 19-13 in Cal Pac play.

“Tim Bross is one of the most talented and respected coaches on the west coast. We are very fortunate to have a coach that has Division I, II, III and was a sitting head coach the last two seasons. Along with great experience, Tim brings elite winning having impacted recruiting and the competitiveness of every program he has served. He will be a great mentor for our student-athletes and we are excited to welcome his family to the CSUSB community.” – Gus Argenal, Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Cal Maritime advanced to the semifinal round of the Cal Pac Men’s Basketball Tournament during his first season of competition as head coach after leading the team to 13 victories, including seven against league competition, throughout a season impacted by last-minute postponements and cancellations from opponents due to COVID protocols.

Before Cal Maritime, Bross was the University of Redlands’ first full-time assistant coach beginning in July of 2018. He also served in the role of assistant director of athletics for game day operations and special projects. During his time as an assistant coach, the Bulldogs enjoyed the most successful two-year period within a 13-season timespan by compiling a 35-18 record. After helping the squad enjoy an eight-win improvement in his first season, Bross was instrumental in Redlands’ subsequent 20-win season — one of only four in the 102-year history of the men’s basketball program and the third since 1960-61.

Before his time at Redlands, Bross was a member of Chaminade University of Honolulu’s basketball staff for two years as an assistant coach. He contributed to Chaminade’s first postseason win in three years by directly handling the recruiting efforts of the 2017-18 incoming class, which produced two all-conference selections. During his tenure, the team posted a combined record of 34-23, which includes victories over two nationally-ranked opponents and a win versus Cal. In addition to recruiting student-athletes from Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington, Bross coordinated the defense and installed new help-side rotation and ball-screen coverage.

The Vancouver, Wash. native attended Gonzaga University, where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Political Science in 2008. Six years later, he earned a Master of Education degree from Hawai’i Pacific University.
