NAIA DIRT: Wilberforce opens

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

I can confirm that Mark Mitchell is no longer the head men’s basketball coach at NAIA Wilberforce University (OH).

Mitchell took over at Wilberforce back in the summer of 2020 after stints as a high school coach in Ohio, and and as an assistant WBB coach at Ohio State. While at OSU, he was part of a program that went 109-33 in four years, while appearing in four NCAA tournaments, twice advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. His daughter Kelsey Mitchell, who played for the Buckeyes, was the 2nd pick overall in the 2018 WNBA draft.

When reached for comment, Wilberforce shared the following with me; “Coach Mitchell’s dedication and leadership have played a pivotal role in the team’s development and success during his tenure. The university expresses gratitude for his hard work and commitment to the student-athletes. As the university transitions, a search is currently underway for a suitable replacement who will continue to uphold the values of excellence and sportsmanship within the Men’s Basketball program.”
