Defiance College welcomes 2010 graduate and former standout guard Mike Floyd as the next head coach of the men’s basketball program, the DC Athletic Department announced on Tuesday.
Floyd, a four-time All-HCAC performer for the Yellow Jackets from 2006-10, becomes the 24th head coach in program history. Floyd played four seasons for Defiance while the program surged to a 77-32 record, won the 2007-08 HCAC title and 2010 HCAC Tournament championship en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Floyd led the HCAC in assists during all four seasons and is second all-time for career assists in DC’s men’s basketball history with 502. The St. John’s Jesuit graduate also holds the DC single-game assists record with 16, which he accomplished twice during his playing career.
The Toledo native will lead the Purple and Gold after serving as the head coach at Toledo Central Catholic for the last 8 seasons. In 2025-26, the Fighting Irish went 23-4 and reached the OHSAA State Tournament in Division III before falling in overtime to Trotwood-Madison in the state semi-finals. In eight years, Floyd guided the Irish to a 125-71 record with five district titles, three 20-win seasons, and the 2022-23 Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) championship. He also received the following distinctions while serving at Central Catholic: Division III All-Northwest District Coach of the Year (2025-26), Division III All-District VII Coach of the Year (2025-26), and TRAC Coach of the Year (2022-23).
In addition to upper-division experience at the high school level, Floyd also has six seasons of college coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level. He spent three seasons at Piedmont College as an assistant coach and went on to rejoin his college coach, Jon Miller, at Hanover for three seasons before taking over at Toledo Central Catholic. His experience also includes two years as an assistant at Ottawa Hills High School.
Floyd’s degree from DC is in business administration and sport management, and he also holds an MBA from Piedmont, which he completed in 2013.
Quoting Head Coach Mike Floyd
I am honored to return to Defiance College as head coach and begin this next chapter at a place I call home. I want to thank President Mankey and Tiffani Selhorst for this great opportunity and for their trust and belief in my vision for the program. I look forward to rebuilding the rich tradition I knew and loved as an athlete while helping these student-athletes reach their full potential, both on and off the court. This is a dream opportunity to give back to the place that shaped me. I look forward to reconnecting with the Defiance College community and I’m excited for what’s ahead. Go Yellow Jackets!
Quoting Athletic Director Tiffani Selhorst
Defiance College men’s basketball has a rich tradition of success, built by outstanding players, coaches, and alumni who have gone on to do great things in the coaching profession. Because of that legacy, it was important for us to find a leader who not only brings experience but a proven record of success. We are confident we have found that in Coach Floyd, who embodies all of those traits as a coach and former DC standout. We are excited for the new direction of our men’s basketball program under his leadership.
