Iowa Western Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chad Van Riessen announced the hiring today of Bobby Naubert as the latest member of the Reivers’ coaching staff.
Coach Naubert comes to Council Bluffs from Mount Pleasant, Michigan where he has served as the Central Michigan men’s basketball director of basketball operations since September of 2019, his third overall with the program.
Coach Van Riessen, in his first year leading the Reivers’ program, is excited to add Bobby to his inaugural staff. “Bobby brings great work ethic, energy, and passion to Iowa Western”, said Van Riessen, “His experience at the NCAA Division I level will allow him to have an immediate impact on our program and players. I’m excited to have Bobby join the Reiver family.”
In 2019-20, Naubert was part of a staff that led a Chippewa squad that averaged 78.3 points per game, ranking first in the MAC and 21st nationally. CMU posted back-to-back 100-point games – 134 in their season opener and then 102 in their second game of the season – marking the first time a CMU men’s basketball team has scored in triple digits in consecutive games since the 1972-73 season.
The 134 points, which came against Mississippi Valley State, is a program record.
Naubert handled the travel arrangements and equipment, as well as the team’s film exchange and budget while with CMU. He also oversaw the team’s managers, assisted with the facilitation of camps, and aided the rest of the coaching staff in the day-to-day operations of the program. A Livonia, Michigan native, he joined the program as a graduate assistant in 2017 and then served as the Chippewas’ video coordinator from April-September, 2019.
As a player, Coach Naubert earned NAIA All-America honors three times and twice was named Academic All-America during a four-year career at Madonna University from 2010-14, earning his bachelor’s degree before moving to CMU where he earned his master’s degree in history.
As a student-athlete, Coach Naubert earned the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Year Award and was honored with Madonna’s Male Athlete of the Year Award and its Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and was a Dr. Leroy Walker Champion of Character Award recipient.
Naubert played professionally in Germany for two years and coached on the club and AAU levels before serving as a graduate assistant/reserve team head coach at Madonna in 2016-17.
“I would like to thank Coach Van Riessen and Dr. Kinney for giving me this opportunity as an assistant coach at Iowa Western”, said Naubert, “I am excited to get to work and be a part of a program that has an incredible history of success on and off the court.”
