Bobby Naubert was a major reason the Garden City Broncbusters were one win away from reaching the National Tournament in 2021-22. And it earned him a promotion.
After one season as a lead assistant, Naubert was named Associate Head Coach on Friday.
“He’s the best assistant coach in the country,” Head Coach, Rusty Elmore said. “And in my short time here, I have seen what he does behind the scenes.”
Naubert was hired last summer as an assistant under former coach Bill Morosco where he headed up the recruiting department and player development. He played a big part in the development of Mo Diarra, who signed with Missouri in the spring.
“I am happy to have the opportunity to continue my career here at Garden City,” Naubert said. “I am grateful to Coach Elmore for his faith in me, and equally, to have an opportunity to work in such a wonderful community who values the student-athletes.”
During his first season in Garden City, the Broncbusters finished 22-10 overall and 15-9 in the Jayhawk, reaching as high as No. 12 in the national rankings. Additionally, Naubert developed the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year (Diarra) and Rookie of the Year, Tone Hunter while sending three players to the Division-I level. Off the floor, Garden City produced a 3.54 grade point average during the fall semester and a 3.11 for the year.
“Bobby is one of the hardest workers I have ever seen,” Director of Athletics Mike Pilosof stated. “He’s constantly watching film and constantly trying to get better.”
Before landing at Garden City, Naubert spent one season as the lead assistant at Iowa Western where he oversaw player development, scouting, game planning, and player academics. In fact, the Reivers finished with the sixth best gpa in the country and placed six players on the NJCAA All-Academic team.
“I would like to thank Coach Elmore for placing his trust in me as I continue to learn from one of the most respected basketball coaches in the game,” Naubert said. “Coach Elmore’s previous successes will help our program move forward, and I am proud to have a position that enables me to contribute.”
Naubert also spent time at his alma mater Central Michigan, where he was the Director of Basketball Operations from 2018-2020 under Keno Davis. During the 2019-20 season, Naubert was part of the staff that led the Chippewas to an average of 78.3 points a game, ranking first in the MAC and 21st nationally in Division I play. In 2017, Naubert joined the program as a graduate assistant, and the following year, he was asked to lead the Chippewas’video department as coordinator. The next year he was promoted to the position of the Director of Basketball Operations.
Naubert played professional basketball in Germany for two years where he earned First-Team All Eurobasket.com award. While in Germany, he also coached 17-U Germany Academy team. Previously, he coached AAU programs at various levels before accepting an assistant position in the men’s basketball program at Madonna University in Michigan.
As a player, Naubert earned All-American honors during his last three seasons and was twice named Academic All-American. Naubert was named the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Leroy Walker Champion of Character award for outstanding achievement in athletics and academics. During his junior year, he was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference Player of the Year. After earning his Bachelor degree from Madonna in 2014, Naubert went on to complete his Master’s degree at Central Michigan University in history.
