The University of New Mexico men’s basketball program and head coach Craig Neal are set to hire Alan Huss as an assistant coach. Huss has spent the last four seasons as the head basketball coach at La Lumiere School, a prep program in La Porte, Ind. He replaces Craig Snow who was named head coach at New Mexico Highlands University in July. Huss is set to officially join the staff later this summer, pending HR approval.
“I’ve seen Alan as a great possible addition to our staff for some time now,” said head coach Craig Neal. “Now is the right time for him, and our program, to add Alan to the Lobo family. He is really going to help us in our recruiting efforts regionally and nationally. I think he’s going to bring a lot of experience from being a head coach and building a program into a national power.”
Huss amassed an impressive 86-22 record during his tenure at La Lumiere School, which was regularly ranked as one of the top high school programs in the nation. He has coached a dozen Division I products at the high school level, including former Lobo Darington Hobson and current Lobo Obij Aget. His 2013-14 Laker team lost to Huntington Prep (W.V.) in the quarterfinals of the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School National Tournament.
Prior to his time at La Lumiere, Huss was the head coach at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind. where he set the school record for wins in each of his final two seasons with the Eagles.
“I’m extremely excited to coach at New Mexico with Coach Neal,” Huss said. “It’s an incredible opportunity as a coach to join the Lobos, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve known Coach Neal for a decade, and to be able to join his staff is really exciting. It’s a national program with a great fan base, and I can’t wait to help the program continue to compete for championships.”
Huss was a four-year member of the Creighton University men’s basketball team from 1997 to 2001 where he played under head coach Dana Altman and alongside NBA sharpshooter Kyle Korver. During his collegiate career with Blue Jays, Huss was part of three NCAA Tournament appearances and three Missouri Valley Conference championships.
The 6-foot-9-inch Huss was a prep standout at North Kansas City High School. He averaged 26 points and 12 rebounds per game for the Hornets en route to All-Kansas City metro honors as a senior. Following his final season at North Kansas City High, he was selected to the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association and Missouri-Kansas all-star games.
