News and Rumors from The DirtKing…..

Indiana Tech Head Coach Brad Winton has apparently resigned after just one year on the job. We got a tip yesterday that he had quit, but I didn’t want to blog about it until I could confirm the rumor. I looked at Indiana Tech’s website to see if there was any info and couldn’t find anything. I went back today to see if there was anything new, and I found that Winton’s bio has had been removed….

I don’t know much, but I’m pretty sure that means he’s not the coach at Tech anymore.

Northern Illinois athletic director Jeff Compher has given his support to Head Coach Ricardo Patton and said that he will be back for another season. In two plus seasons at NIU, Patton’s record stands at 25-60 (13-32 MAC). The Huskies just ended a 10 game losing streak with a buzzer beater win vs. Central Michigan.

Speaking of returning, URI AD Thorr Bjorn has said that he is interested in extending Jim Baron’s contract after the season. Baron has three years left on a deal that he signed in 2003. He is the highest paid state employee in Rhode Island ($643,000 in 2008). Baron has never guided the Rams to the NCAA Tournament, but this looks like it may be the year – they are 20-6 with three games (plus the A-10 Tourney) remaining.

On the other hand, a 43-19 run by Ole Miss in the final 11 minutes on Wednesday may have been the final nail in the coffin for Auburn’s Jeff Lebo. A source close to the situation has told us that with a new arena scheduled to open next year they need to create a “buzz” to fill the seats. Lebo’s been on the “hot seat” all year, but it seems like AD Jay Jacobs is feeling the heat now more than ever to make a move.

Don’t believe the Steve Masiello to Fordham rumors. The Louisville assistant does not appear to be in the mix, despite many reports. This just appears to be people putting together White Plains native + Pitino guy + good recruiter at a high major. I guess it adds up, but it’s not going to happen.

I’ve heard some crazy rumors out of the University of the District of Columbia. There are some outrageous stories coming from our Nations Capitol – I’ll update this one when I get a better handle on the situation.
