Newton Named Assistant Coach at Dakota Wesleyan University

The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball program has named Terrell Newton its top assistant coach for the upcoming 2021-22 season, the Dakota Wesleyan athletic department announced Friday.

Newton returns to DWU carrying a plethora of coaching experience serving most recently as both the head girls varsity basketball coach and athletic director at Miller High School taking over in 2019. Under his guidance, six Rustlers received all-conference accolades while the Miller High program made a pair of SoDak 16 appearances.

On top of his coaching responsibilities, the Huron, S.D., native was also instrumental in the operation of the Tri-State Ambush Basketball Academy where he functioned as both a camp director and player-development coach beginning in 2017. In his role, Newton taught the fundamentals of the game and various skill-development drills to youth of all ages while instilling a wide range of workouts.

Before his roles with Tri-State Ambush Basketball Academy and Miller High School, the 2016 All-GPAC Honorable Mention forward served as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the DWU men’s basketball program from 2016 through 2018. Newton aided with both player development and recruiting duties while also coaching the junior-varsity team.

In 2016, the 2010 South Dakota High School Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year spent a short time with the Dakota Magic, a semi-professional team of the National Basketball League of America, where he played and operated under current NBA-G League assistant Kasib Powell. Newton averaged 11 points, 11.5 rebounds and seven assists per contest as a player and later assisted with tryouts and recruiting as a scouting and recruiting coordinator.

“I am excited that we are adding Terrell as our assistant coach and he has immediate credibility with our roster because he was once in their shoes,” expressed Dakota Wesleyan University men’s head basketball coach Matt Wilber on the return of Newton to the Tiger sideline. “Terrell grew as a player, as a person, and as a coach here at DWU and he will continue that path in his new role in being able to provide our players with a unique perspective based on his experiences.”

Newton played his final two seasons of collegiate basketball at Dakota Wesleyan in 2015 and 2016 following stints at Dakota State University, Iowa Lakes Community College and Wayne State University. In his first season at DWU, the 6-foot-5 forward suffered a season-ending injury while the Tigers reached the title game of the 2015 NAIA Division II National tournament. Newtown started all 32 games as a senior and was selected as an all-conference player helping Blue and Gray reach the round of 16 at the 2016 NAIA DII Men’s Basketball Championship.
