Wofford men’s basketball head coach Mike Young has announced that Darris Nichols has joined the coaching staff for the 2013-14 season. Nichols was a four-year letterman at West Virginia and spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky.
In his first season with the Norse, the team was 23-7 and played in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 2012-13 season was the first for Northern Kentucky at the Division I level as they posted an 11-16 overall mark. The team was 9-9 in the Atlantic Sun.
Nichols, a native of Radford, Virginia, emerged as one of the top point guards in the Big East his final two years at West Virginia. He averaged 10.7 points per game as a senior under the direction of head coach Bob Huggins and led the Mountaineers to a 26-11 record.
As a junior, Nichols dished out 4.6 assists per contest and averaged 10.9 points per game as West Virginia posted a 27-9 record. He led the Big East in assist-to-turnover ratio and was named to the NIT All-Tournament Team.
After graduation, Nichols played professionally overseas before returning to serve as a graduate assistant at West Virginia for two seasons.
Nichols brother, Shane, was a three-year starter at Wofford and is currently an assistant basketball coach at Hofstra. Last season he coached at Niagara and was an assistant for Mike Young at Wofford for two years, reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2011.
