Northern Colorado Basketball Staff Update

Head Coach Steve Smiley rounded out his 2022-23 season coaching staff with the promotion of Brett Cloepfil to Director of Operations and bringing back UNC alum Colin Gause as the Director of Player Development.

Brett Cloepfil steps into the role of Director of Basketball Operations for Northern Colorado men’s basketball after starting as a volunteer assistant in the 2019-20 season and spending the last two as the Director of Player Development.

“I’m so excited that Coach Cloepfil is going to be our new Director of Basketball Operations. Coach “Cloep” has been a huge part of our program for the past several years, and he’s going to do a great job in his new role on our staff,” Smiley said. “Coach Cloep has an elite skill set, has a great feel for the game of basketball and people, and is the type of person that our staff and players will benefit from being around daily. Coach Cloep is truly a total-package coach, and we’re lucky to have him here at UNC!”

An Evans, Colorado native, he was the head coach at Greeley West High School from 2014-19 leading the Spartans to the 5A State Tournament all five years.

He also has experience as an AAU coach helping develop 20 plus Division I players and over 40 former players have gone on to play college basketball at some level.

Colin Gause returns to his alma mater after spending the past season at Western Nebraska Community College as an assistant coach.

“I’m really excited to announce the hiring of Colin Gause, an alum of UNC and a big part of our program for many years as a student manager before becoming a graduate assistant at Cameron University and most recently being the head assistant coach at Western Nebraska Community College,” Smiley said of the hire. “Colin has a great work ethic, is hungry to learn more, and continues to improve. He can help our program in so many different capacities including video, logistics, scouting, and much more. He will be the jack of all trades in our program, and I can’t wait to work with him and watch him continue to grow!”

Gause started his work in basketball as the men’s basketball head manager at UNC from 2016-19. After graduating, he went on to spend two years at Division II Cameron University as a graduate assistant coach overseeing duties of scouting, player development, recruiting, academics and operations.

A Tucson, Ariz. native, Gause has coached at multiple camps including the Lute Olson Basketball Academy, the Sean Miller Basketball camp and Point Guard College Camp.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in sociology from UNC.
