Northern Colorado Director of Athletics Darren Dunn announced that Head Men’s Basketball Coach Stephen Smiley has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the Bears through the 2030 season.
The extension reflects Northern Colorado’s continued investment in the future of its men’s basketball program and reaffirms the leadership of Smiley, who has steadily elevated the Bears in the Big Sky Conference and beyond. The amended agreement includes an increased base salary, guaranteed compensation through 2029, revised performance incentives, and a retention bonus, all signaling the University’s confidence in Smiley’s long-term vision.
“Coach Smiley has built a program that reflects the very best of what we want UNC Basketball to represent: competitive success, academic excellence, and strong leadership,” said Dunn. “This extension is both a recognition of the progress we’ve made and a commitment to the vision we share for the future. I’m thrilled that Coach Smiley will continue to lead our program and am confident that even greater things are ahead for Bear Nation.”
Under Smiley’s direction, the Bears have demonstrated consistent development both on and off the court, with a strong emphasis on academic performance, player growth, and community engagement. Smiley’s program has also emphasized NCAA academic benchmarks, maintaining high APR standards while positioning the team to compete for Big Sky titles.
“I’m incredibly grateful to President Feinstein, Darren Dunn, and the Board of Trustees for their continued belief in me and in our program,” said Smiley. “Northern Colorado is a special place, and it’s an honor to lead this team every day. We’ve built a strong foundation, and I’m excited for the opportunity to keep pushing forward with a group of student-athletes and staff who are committed to doing things the right way—on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. The best is still ahead for UNC Basketball.”
Smiley first signed a multiyear agreement in 2022 and has since led the Bears with a focus on sustainable excellence. The new contract amendment was approved by the UNC Board of Trustees and takes effect on July 1, 2025, extending through June 30, 2030.
