Notre Dame Basketball Staff Update

Glenn & Stacey Murphy Notre Dame Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry announced a series of men’s basketball staff updates on Thursday, highlighted by one internal promotion and three new additions to the Fighting Irish program.

Mike Farrelly, entering his sixth consecutive season working alongside Shrewsberry, has been elevated to associate head coach.

“Mike has been an invaluable part of our staff for the last five years, including two seasons together at Penn State and the last three here at Notre Dame,” Shrewsberry said. “He touches every area of what we do—from recruiting and player development to scouting, scheduling, and daily operations. He is incredibly organized, highly respected, and has a unique ability to build meaningful relationships. This promotion is well deserved and I’m grateful to continue working alongside him as we continue building Notre Dame Basketball.”

Farrelly’s rising profile in college basketball was reinforced nationally this past year. He was named to the Silver Waves Media 100 Most Impactful High Major Assistant Coaches List and selected for the prestigious inaugural NABC Flight School cohort.

Next, Tony Rack joins the Irish as an assistant coach following a highly successful five-year stint at Winthrop, where he served as associate head coach last season. During his time in Rock Hill, the Eagles compiled a 101-63 record and made three Big South Championship game appearances. Notably, Rack helped develop current Irish center Logan Duncomb, the 2026 Big South Player of the Year.

“We are excited to welcome Tony to Notre Dame,” Shrewsberry said. “Tony brings a tremendous amount of energy, passion, and experience from a winning program at Winthrop. His work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to player development perfectly align with our values.”

Prior to Winthrop, Rack spent three seasons at Western Carolina where he helped orchestrate a 12-win turnaround from 2019 to 2020. He also spent three seasons at Northern Kentucky, contributing to the program’s transition to the Division I era and its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2017. During his time at NKU, he earned a spot on the Under Armour 30-under-30 list.

Next, Isaiah Thompson reunites with Coach Shrewsberry as the player development and recruiting coordinator. Thompson spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant under Matt Painter at Purdue, helping guide the Boilermakers to a Sweet 16, an Elite Eight, and a No. 1 national ranking. He also assisted in the development of consecutive First Team All-American Braden Smith.

“Isaiah has been embedded in high-level basketball environments throughout his career,” Shrewsberry noted. “As an outstanding former point guard, he understands the game from a player’s perspective, which will be a real asset for our guys every day. He understands the habits, discipline, and standards that come with sustained success.”

Before entering coaching, Thompson enjoyed a standout playing career. He appeared in 152 games for Purdue—playing his first two seasons under Shrewsberry’s tutelage—where he racked up 1,260 career points and 234 three-pointers before concluding his playing career at FGCU.

Lastly, joining the program on June 17 as the new director of basketball operations will be Colin McGettigan. He arrives in South Bend after spending the last two years as the Milwaukee Bucks basketball operations intern.

“What stood out most throughout the hiring process was how highly regarded he is by everyone who has worked with him. Colin is organized, detail-oriented, and has a personality that allows him to build strong relationships throughout a program,” Shrewsberry stated. “As we built out our staff, it was important to find someone who could enhance both our daily operations and our culture. Colin’s experience, professionalism, and approach to the job make him a great fit.”

McGettigan’s path to Notre Dame also includes a two-year stint as the director of basketball operations at Montana State, three years as a graduate assistant video coordinator at Colorado State, plus an additional four years prior as a student manager. He also has USA Basketball experience, having spent four summers with the organization.
