Seattle University men’s basketball head coach Cameron Dollar has announced that Mike Nowell, a well-known local high school and AAU coach, will join the Redhawk program as an assistant coach effective August 1, 2014.

Nowell (pronounced “know-ell”) has been an assistant coach at Garfield High School since 2009, helping the Bulldogs post a 27-1 record on their way to winning the Washington 4A state championship last March. Also the head coach of Garfield’s junior varsity team since 2011, he contributed to the development of players such as Tony Wroten Jr., currently a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, and Tramaine Isabell, the 2014 4A Player of the Year.

From 2005 to 2011, Nowell was an assistant coach within the Seattle Rotary Style Basketball AAU program, one of the top club teams in the country. Recent Seattle U graduate D’Vonne Pickett Jr. and current Redhawks Isiah Umipig and Emmanuel Chibuogwu played for Seattle Rotary Style, as did NBA players Aaron Brooks, Peyton Siva, and Rodney Stuckey.

“I am excited to add Mike to our staff, as he has great ties with the top high school and AAU coaches in the area,” Dollar said. “Mike will be a big help for us as we continue to draw interest from some of the best players in Seattle.”

Nowell played for Clark Atlanta University from 1989 to 1993, earning SIAC first team all-conference honors from 1991 to 1993. He was the team’s freshman of the year and led the team in rebounding in 1990. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Kaplan University in 2009. He replaces Amadou Koundoul, who left the program after the 2013-14 season to move closer to family in the Midwest.
