I’ve mentioned this a few times over the past couple weeks. Just wanted to pass along the official statement from Wabash Valley on the hiring of Mike Carpenter:
Wabash Valley College has a new Head Men’s Basketball Coach. He is Mike Carpenter who has been the Head Coach at Danville Area College for the past seven seasons becomes the 18th Head Coach at WVC. His Jaguars finished this year with a 28-4 record the most wins in school history. Carpenter has been in coaching for 19 years with assistant positions at Western Illinois University, University of Saint Francis and at Danville Area College before he became head coach.
He has had great success at the NJCAA Division II College level as his Jaguars won 139 games. He has taken his teams to the NJCAA Final four once and the Elite 8 once. The Jaguars hold two Region Championships and two Conference Championships. This past season they set a school record for most wins with 28 and they went on a 17 game win streak at the end of the season. Carpenter has been selected as the NJCAA District Coach of the Year and the Illinois Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2012. The past two seasons he was the Conference Coach of the Year and this past season 2013 he was the Region 24 Coach of the Year.
Carpenter will be replacing Hall of Fame Coach Dan Sparks who has been at Wabash Valley for the past seven years. Over the past seven seasons the Warriors have won 20 or more games six of the seven and advanced to the NJCAA Division I Tourney in Hutchinson, Kansas twice. “I am extremely appreciative to the Administration and selection committee at WVC for choosing me as their Head Basketball Coach,” said Carpenter, “This is an opportunity I could not turn down and I am excited to work for a school that has such an outstanding reputation both Athletically and Academically plus they have a great tradition.” Coach Carpenter is in the process of recruiting and he feels good about the young we are bringing into the program.
Carpenter holds an Associate degree in Arts from Danville Area Community College and a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Social Studies from the University of Saint Francis and is very close to completing his Masters degree in Sports Management. Carpenter is from Linton, Indiana where he was a standout athlete in Basketball and Baseball earning seven varsity letters and all-conference and all-area awards. He is the son of Bill and Diane Carpenter.
