Chris Markwood has joined the Boston College men’s basketball coaching staff, it was announced today by head coach Earl Grant. Markwood spent the previous seven seasons at Northeastern – the last three as associate head coach – where he helped guide the Huskies to two NCAA Tournament appearances, two Colonial Athletic Association regular season titles, and four trips to the CAA Tournament championship game.
“I am really excited to have Chris on our staff,” Grant explained. “I have been able to witness first-hand the type of players that he has recruited. He is a tremendous coach, is loyal and hard-working, understands Boston, and knows how to recruit nationally to bring top talent to our great city. Chris possesses great insight from an X’s and O’s standpoint.”
Markwood arrived at Northeastern prior to the 2014-15 season and helped lead the Huskies to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 24 years. He was promoted to associate head coach in 2018 and has served as the recruiting coordinator while overseeing practice and gameday planning, skill development, academic monitoring and student-athlete mentorship. He was voted as the top assistant in the CAA by his peers in the summer of 2020.
With the Huskies, Markwood was instrumental in the recruitment and development of Vasa Pusica, Jordan Roland, and Tyson Walker. Pusica was a two-time First Team All-CAA selection, earning the 2019 CAA Tournament’s Most Valuable Player award as the Huskies took home the CAA title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Roland was also a First Team All-CAA pick and was named the 2020 New England Player of the Year after finishing as seventh in the country with 722 points and leading the CAA in scoring, 21.9 points per game. Walker was named to the 2021 All-CAA First Team while also being tabbed as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year
Under his tutelage, 11 players have earned All-CAA honors, and T.J. Williams garnered honorable mention All-American honors after being named CAA Player of the Year in 2017. Three players won CAA scoring titles and the Huskies routinely ranked among the nation’s leaders in field goal percentage, finishing as high as ninth nationally in 2015 (.486).
Prior to Northeastern, Markwood spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Vermont, where he helped lead the Catamounts to three straight postseason appearances, including an NCAA tournament berth in 2012 and an NIT invitation in 2014. UVM won more than 20 games in each of Markwood’s three seasons on staff and appeared in the America East title game twice, winning the championship in 2012. In Burlington, Markwood worked with the Catamounts’ perimeter players and assisted in all areas of the program, including recruiting, scouting, and player development. He aided in the recruitment and development of numerous players who earned All-America East accolades.
Prior to arriving on the Lake Champlain shores, Markwood served as an assistant coach for five seasons at his alma mater, the University of Maine. In Orono, he worked with the perimeter players and helped develop four America East all-conference selections and two all-rookie picks.
As a player, Markwood enjoyed a standout prep career at South Portland High School in Maine, and was named the 2000 Maine Gatorade Player of the Year. He began his college career as a student-athlete at Notre Dame, before transferring to Maine for his final two seasons of eligibility, serving as a team captain as a senior in 2004-05.
