Following up on something that I mentioned back on March 30th (JUCO DIRT). Ranger College has officially named TJ Cox as their new head men’s basketball coach. Here is the release from Ranger:
After completing his 1st season as an Assistant Coach at Dodge City Community College, Timothy “TJ” Cox has seen unprecedented success in his five years in the Division I National Junior College Athletic Association ranks. While accumulating a record of 130-24 in his five years as an Assistant Coach.
During his first season as an Assistant at Dodge City, TJ facilitated all aspects of the program with an emphasis on recruiting, player development, academics, opponent scouting, and strength and conditioning. Cox’s work ethic and his desire to lead young adults played a critical role in the team’s success which resulted in the most winning season in Dodge City CC school history. Concluding with a 30-5 overall record, The Conquistadors also appeared in their first NJCAA National Tournament since 1974 earning the #2 overall seed while winning the KJCCC regular season Championship along with a Region VI Tournament title being the first since 1982. While in the role of lead recruiter for Dodge City, the staff quickly got to work as they signed a top 10 preseason ranking team with only one sole returner from the previous 15-9 season.
Prior to Cox’s stint at Dodge City Community College, TJ spent one season at Tallahassee Community College where he aided in all aspects of the program that would result in only the school’s fourth Panhandle regular season Championship in history. With an overall record of 19-3, Cox took lead on all skill development training resulting in the Panhandle Conference Player of The Year, two players selected for All-State honors, and four players earning All-Conference honors.
Before joining the Tallahassee Eagles, Cox spent the previous three seasons as an Assistant Coach at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois. During his time at Logan, Cox played a vital factor in taking Logan Basketball to unprecedented success. During his three-year stint at John A. Logan College, the Volunteers acquired an overall record of 81-16 (84% winning-percentage). This record also stands as both the most wins and the highest winning-percentage in any three consecutive seasons in John A. Logan’s 51-year program history.
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Cox went to John A. Logan from the University of North Texas where he served on the staff as a Graduate Assistant under Grant McCasland during his transition to North Texas.
Prior to his time at North Texas, Cox spent the entire 2016-2017 season alongside McCasland during his one-year tenue at Arkansas State. Here, he assisted the staff in the areas of player development, scouting, on campus recruiting, video breakdown, scheduling, and team travel as a Graduate Assistant. During the staff’s stay in Jonesboro, Arkansas State saw their fourth 20-win season in school history and had the second-largest turnaround in the ‘16-’17 NCAA Division I basketball season.
During his time working at Arkansas State, Cox earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration. He completed his undergraduate degree from Covenant College where he also competed collegiately. During his career there, Cox was selected to the First-Team USA South All-Conference team where he led the team in scoring and assists. In addition, he played an integral role in earning the team a spot for the first time in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
