I mentioned last month that Casper College (WY) head coach Joel Davidson was going to join the staff at Northern Colorado – it is now official…

Northern Colorado men’s basketball coach B.J. Hill has announced that Joel Davidson will be joining his staff after an illustrious and successful coaching career at the junior college level.

Davidson comes to Greeley after a stellar run as the head coach at Casper College. During his five years at the helm of Casper’s program, he amassed a 110-54 (.671 winning pct.) record and notched no fewer than 24 wins in each of his last four seasons. He also coached and developed Corey Spence, a point guard who played and Casper last season and just signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Hill in Greeley.

During his 10 years as a head coach for both Casper College and Sheridan College before that, Davidson has racked up a 233-92 (.717 winning pct.).

"We’re very excited to have Joel as a part of our staff," Hill said. "When you look at his experience, his record, what he’s been able to do as a head coach, we’re very fortunate to have him as a part of what we’re trying to do at Northern Colorado.

"Him being a head coach previously will have an impact in every aspect. He’s going to have an on-bench, in-game feel that we haven’t had on staff. He’s going to have an experienced eye in recruiting that we haven’t had in terms of where he’s been and having a head coach’s point of value. It’s going to be invaluable to me."

During the 2012-13 season, Davidson’s last with Casper, he helped lead the Thunderbirds to a 24-8 record and a trip to the Region 9 tournament, hosted by Casper. The Thunderbirds lost in the second round of the tournament, 80-74 to Northwest College in Wyoming. After the season, he was named the Region 9 North Coach of the Year, the second time he’s earned that honor.

Davidson has also been named the Region 9 Coach of the Year and Wyoming Conference Coach of the Year twice, in 2006 and 2007.

Over the last four years at Casper, Davidson has racked up a gaudy 97-35 record and had two players named NJCAA All-Americans and nine named to the all-conference teams.

During the 2011-12 season, Davidson guided Casper to a 25-9 record and took the Thunderbirds all the way to the championship of the Region 9 tournament, eventually losing to Otero (Colo.) Junior College in the championship.

In 2010-11, Davidson coached the Thunderbirds to a 24-9 record and a trip to the semifinals of the Region 9 tournament. In 2009-10, Casper finished 24-9. Davidson coached Casper to the Region 9 tournament in each of his final four years.

Before taking the job at Casper College in 2008, Davidson was the head coach and athletic director at Sheridan (Wyo.) College. Just like his time at Casper, Davidson was supremely successful at Sheridan, amassing a 123-38 (.764 pct.) in his five years at Sheridan. He coached two NJCAA All-Americans and 10 all-conference players at Sheridan.

Before being named the head coach at Sheridan in July 2003, Davidson served as an assistant coach there for four years.

Davidson graduated from Wyoming with a degree in social science in 2002 and has taught a number of physical education and communication classes over the course of his junior college coaching career.
