Following up on some DIRT from earlier today. It’s now been made official that after six years of leading the Essex County College Men’s Basketball team, Head Coach Corey Lowery has stepped down from the position to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Coach Lowery leaves Essex as the winningest coach in program history. Lowery’s teams have won a Region XIX record of 5 straight Region Championships and 6 straight Garden State Athletic Conference Championships. Lowery has taken his teams to the Division II National Tournament in Danville, Illinois 5 years in a row. The Wolverines finished as National Champion runner-up in 2014, a Final Four finish in 2016, and finished 7th overall this past year while breaking a school record for wins with a 32-2 record. Lowery was named Region XIX Coach of the Year the last 5 years in a row as well as District 12 Coach of the Year. Lowery’s teams finished with an overall record of 157-35 and a conference record of 88-6. Lowery has sent over 40 student-athletes to Division I, II, and III Universities at the NCAA and NAIA level. Seven of his Sophomores received scholarships this year.
Lowery states, “I would like to thank Essex County College for the opportunity that was afforded to me and my staff. I am truly appreciative that I was given a platform that helped better the lives and opportunities for the many student athletes that I coached over the past 6 years. It has been an honor to have followed in the footsteps of two of the great coaches at Essex County College, Mr. Cleo Hill (God rest his soul) and Mr. Melvin Knight. I hope that we have left a legacy that has made the college proud!”
