Chad Dollar has been promoted to associate head coach on Georgia Tech’s men’s basketball coaching staff, and Tom Herrion has joined the staff as an assistant coach, head coach Brian Gregory announced Wednesday.
Dollar, a 15-year veteran as a Division I assistant coach who played high school basketball in the Atlanta area, joined the Georgia Tech basketball staff on April 9, 2011, and has been on Gregory’s staff for three seasons. He has been instrumental in recruiting most of the players on Tech’s current roster, and in the on-court development of the Yellow Jackets’ perimeter players.
"This is a well-deserved honor and recognition for Chad," said Gregory. "Atlanta is his home, and this program’s success is very important to him. He has done a tremendous job in every key area of our program; academics, player development, recruiting, and game preparation. He is a very talented coach, a rising star in this profession.
Dollar came to Tech after spending the 2010-11 season at Wichita State, which won the NIT championship, went 29-8 overall and finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference regular season under head coach Gregg Marshall. In three seasons at Tech, he has helped turning the Yellow Jackets program back into a winning one and helping bring in three excellent recruiting classes.
Before going to Wichita State, Dollar spent three seasons as an assistant coach under John Brady, two at Arkansas State (2008-10) and one at LSU (2007-08). Prior to LSU, Dollar coached the 2006-07 campaign at Murray State and spent four seasons (2002-06) as an assistant at Georgia Southern. He was also an associate head coach at Eastern Kentucky (2001-02) under Travis Ford and served two seasons (1999-2001) on the staff at Western Carolina.
Herrion spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Marshall, where he led the Thundering Herd to a berth in the 2011 CIT and the 2012 NIT, the program’s first appearance in that tournament since 1988. He was 67-67 in his four seasons in Huntington, W.Va. He served as College of Charleston’s head coach for four seasons from 2002-06, amassing an 80-38 mark with a second-round appearance in the 2003 NIT. Herrion’s career record is 147-105.
"We are extremely excited about having Tom join our staff and family here at Georgia Tech," said Gregory. "He brings a wealth of experience that will have a very positive impact on our players and program. He has an energy and passion that will not only resonate with our players, but also with our recruiting efforts throughout the ACC footprint."
Prior to his first head coaching stint at Charleston, Herrion was an assistant under Pete Gillen for eight years, first for four seasons (1994-98) at Providence College, where he helped the Friars compile a 72-53 record, play in two NITs and reach the elite eight of the NCAA Tournament in 1997. He moved with Gillen to Virginia (1998-2002), helping the Cavaliers to two NITs and one NCAA Tournament and a 70-49 record.
After leaving Charleston and after one year as a commentator for ESPN, Herrion served as associate head coach for Jamie Dixon at Pittsburgh, where the Panthers went 83-24 in three seasons (2007-10), played in three NCAA Tournaments and won the 2008 Big East Tournament.
