United States Merchant Marine Academy Interim Athletic Director, Captain Bill Fell, has announced the hiring of Stephen Hayn as the Mariners new Head Coach for Men’s Basketball. Hayn comes to the Academy from Dowling College (Oakdale, NY) where he spent the last 8 years as Head Coach.
Coach Hayn finished the 2013-14 season with a 22-7 record, East Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors, All Met Writers Division II Coach of the Year honors, and a trip to the Division II ECC post-season tournament semi-finals. Prior to coaching at Dowling College, Hayn spent 5 seasons as the Head Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, NJ). In his last season at Stevens Tech, Coach Hayn finished with a 15-12 record, the school’s first trip to the Skyline Conference semi-finals, and the second highest win total in school history.
From 1999-2001 he was the Head Coach at the State University of New York at Fredonia (Fredonia, NY). Hayn’s other college basketball coaching experiences include being an Assistant Coach at Central Connecticut State University (New Britain, CT) from 1996-99, and at Genesee Community College (Batavia, NY) from 1995-96. He was also the Head Coach for the varsity basketball team at Port Jefferson High School on Long Island from 1993-95.
“I am impressed with Coach Hayn’s noticeable success at turning teams into winning programs, which can be seen by leading them to post-season conference tournaments" says Captain Fell. "I look forward to watching him help the Midshipmen succeed on and off the court this upcoming season”
Hayn graduated with his MS in Special Education from Long Island University- Post in 1993. He earned his BA in Liberal Studies from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1991. In addition to attending Stony Brook, Hayn played basketball there from 1989-91 including being a team captain from 1990-1991. Prior to joining Stony Book, Hayn played basketball from 1988-89 at Union College.
