Had this as a rumor last week – it’s now official…
Ryan Hyland has been named the men’s head basketball coach at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Director of Athletics Carol Kashow has announced.
"We are very excited for Ryan to lead our men’s basketball program," Kashow said. "His experience and proven record of success make him the right person to bring our basketball program to the level of excellence that is standard in the John Jay Athletics program."
Hyland and his coaching staff join a talented and determined group of players at John Jay that hope to bring tremendous success to the program moving forward.
"I am humbled and honored by this opportunity to join the John Jay family," said Hyland. "I want to thank Athletic Director Carol Kashow for this chance to return to NYC to a great institution with an amazing vision to succeed. I am committed to supporting our student-athletes and building a program that strives for excellence on and off the court."
From 2007-2011, Hyland served as a manager, player, and student assistant coach at Catholic University of America (CUA) before becoming a full-time graduate assistant coach and guards position coach for the Cardinals in 2012. Hyland also earned his Bachelors of Arts and Sciences in Psychology in 2011 and his Masters of Science in Business Analysis in 2014.
As a full-time assistant at CUA, Hyland handled the day-to-day operations of the program, coordinated all nationwide recruiting efforts, planned and implemented practices and game preparation, and was in charge of individual in-season player workouts, working closely with Cardinal guards as a specialized position coach. Hyland developed five All-Conference guards, including Bryson Fonville, who was named First Team All-Landmark last year, Steve Limberiou, who was named to the 2nd Team and is a 1,000 point career scorer, and Shawn Holmes, who was named to the 1st Team in 2012-2013 and is also a 1,000 point career scorer. Hyland also coached Darrell Caroll, the only Division III player amongst the finalists for the Arthur Ashe Award in 2011-2012, the same year that the team tied for its best start in school history at 11-0.
During the 2012-2013 season, Hyland coached Chris Kearney, a 1st Team All-American, Josten’s Trophy Finalist, NABC All-Star, Conference Player of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year. In that same year, the Cardinals were rewarded with the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, after finishing with the best assist/turnover ratio and recording the second fewest turnovers in the nation. They were ranked in the top 25 in the nation every week of the season (as high as #6), and they finished with 22 regular season wins for just the third time in 102 years of basketball. To top it all off, the coaching staff was awarded with both the Landmark Conference and Mid Atlantic Coaching Staff of the Year Awards, and they were amongst the 15 finalists for the Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award. This past season, the Cardinals enjoyed another solid year at 14-12, and along with Bryson Fonville being named 1st Team All-Landmark and Steve Limberiou being named to the 2nd Team, freshman standout Corey Stanford has been chosen as the Landmark Rookie of the Year.
Hyland has also coached and/or directed at eleven elite summer basketball camps over the last five years, working alongside the likes of Florida Head Coach Billy Donovan, Michigan Head Coach John Beilein, former St. John’s Head Coach and current Kansas Assistant Coach Norm Roberts, and Memphis Tigers Head Coach Josh Pastner.
He is from Breezy Point, NY and was born in New York City. His move back home from Washington DC marks a new chapter in the life of the John Jay Men’s Basketball program. As he and his staff prepare for another year of college hoops, the future is looking bright for the Bloodhounds.
