Following-up on something that I first mentioned early yesterday (NAIA DIRT)…Nigel Jenkins has officially resigned as the head men’s basketball coach at Waldorf University (IA). He will be replaced on an interim basis by associate head coach Demitrius Martin. Here’s the official statement from Waldorf:

Nigel Jenkins has resigned as head coach of the Waldorf University men’s basketball team. Associate head coach Demitrius Martin has been named the interim head coach for the 2024-25 season.

Jenkins moves on from Waldorf after spending the last 13 years leading the men’s basketball program. He is the all-time winningest coach in program history in the school’s NAIA era with 137 victories. During his tenure, 22 players earned postseason recognition, including three this past season in Khyle Washington (First Team All-North Star), Ugo Ejiofor (North Star Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-North Star), and Khalil Grayson (Honorable Mention All-North Star).

“We thank Nigel for his devotion to Waldorf University and the men’s basketball program the past 13 years,” said Waldorf athletic director Chad Gassman. “Nigel has represented the university and athletic department with class and he was a great member of the Forest City community. He will be a Waldorf Warrior for life.”

Jenkins coached three All-Americans during his time at Waldorf, including Demitrius Martin, who will take over the interim head coach title for the 2024-25 season. This will mark Martin’s fourth year on the coaching staff at Waldorf. As a player for the Warriors, Martin earned NAIA All-American honors after he led the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) in scoring with an average of 22.5 points per game.

“I am extremely excited for this opportunity to lead this program, and great group of young men,” said Martin. “The support from the Forest City community has been absolutely incredible ever since the day I stepped foot on campus as a player back in 2018. I would like to extend my gratitude for Nigel, for his authentic mentorship throughout the years. I’m happy to call him a life-long friend. I am eager to embark on this journey as we create new memories, and new successes. Let’s rock!”

Martin and the Warriors begin the 2024-25 season October 31 at Mount Mercy. The home opener is November 13 vs. Luther College.
