Mercy College has hired Jody King, Ph.D., as the new head coach of the men’s basketball program.
Dr. King’s teams have ranked in the Top 10 in the country in points allowed per game and advanced to postseason play in all six of his years as a head coach. He boasts a career 115-56 record across six seasons, averaging 19.2 wins per season.
"We are extremely pleased and excited to welcome Dr. Jody King to our staff at Mercy," Interim Director of Athletics Bill Sullivan said. "He has demonstrated the ability to develop and establish a winning tradition with his programs, and we are very optimistic about the future of our Mavericks basketball program with his leadership. We also hold high regard for his academic background, which is paramount to both our department’s mission and student-athlete experience."
Dr. King has spent 21 years coaching basketball across several levels, most recently spending the past three years as the head coach at Hostos Community College. He has led the Caimans to back-to-back Top 10 national rankings and regular season conference titles, three consecutive Region XV Tournament appearances, and was named the CUNY Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

"Although this journey won’t be easy, competing in the highly recognized East Coast Conference, our players will grow as individuals and as a team from the exceptional experience of being a college student-athlete at Mercy College."
Dr. King earned his Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Yeshiva University in 2007. He also completed his Master’s degree in general psychology at Yeshiva and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from New York University in 1998. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and has been involved with Coaches vs. Cancer since 2008.
