Following up on some DIRT from 6/12…Quinnipiac made it official today by naming Dwayne Lee as an assistant basketball coach. Here’s the press release:

The Quinnipiac men’s basketball program and Head Coach Baker Dunleavy have announced the addition of assistant coach Dwayne Lee to the Bobcats’ coaching staff ahead of the 2019-20 season, as announced on Monday, July 8.

Most recently, Lee spent two seasons as an assistant on Mark Schmidt’s staff at St. Bonaventure (2017-18, 2018-19).

“We are pleased to welcome Dwayne and his family into our program,” Dunleavy said. “He had an accomplished career as a point guard at Saint Joseph’s, and has been an integral part of winning programs at both Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Bonaventure. Dwayne will help make our team better every day, and we’re excited for him to join us as we look forward to the 2019-20 season.”

In his first season at SBU, Lee helped the Bonnies to a program-record 26 wins as well as an NCAA Tournament victory in the First Four over UCLA in 2017-18. He mentored Atlantic 10 All-Conference guards Jaylen Adams, Matt Mobley and Idris Taqqee during 2017-18.

Lee and the Bonnies then went 18-16 in 2018-19 (12-6 A10), advancing to the conference championship game at the Barclay’s Center vs. Saint Louis. From Feb. 6 to March 16, the program won 10 of 12 games en route to claiming the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament.

Prior to joining the St. Bonaventure staff, Lee served as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson for four seasons. A graduate of famed St. Anthony’s (N.J.) and Saint Joseph’s University, Lee has roots in the Atlantic 10 Conference and throughout the northeast. He helped FDU reach the NCAA Tournament in 2016, as the Knights won the NEC postseason tournament to clinch the conference’s automatic berth. Fairleigh Dickinson won 18 games in 2015-16 despite having the third-youngest roster in the country. During his time with the program, he helped recruit and develop All-Conference selections Darian Anderson, Earl Potts Jr. and Mike Holloway.

Lee began his coaching career at Wagner as the graduate manager in 2012-13. He was a standout player in high school, college and professionally. A native of Jersey City, N.J., Lee played for Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s High. Lee helped the Friars to two straight New Jersey State Tournament of Champions titles and a No. 2 national ranking by USA Today.

Lee went on to play in the Atlantic 10 Conference at Saint Joseph’s for coach Phil Martelli from 2002-06. Over his four-year career on Hawk Hill, Lee helped Saint Joseph’s to two NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT berth. All told, Lee was a part of 96 wins, the second best total for a four-year class in school history, while finishing 11th in school history with 371 assists.

After graduating with a degree in marketing, Lee played professionally for Sellbytel Baskets in Germany’s top division. He later helped the Vermont Frost Heaves to the ABA Championship and then concluded his playing career in 2011-12 with Etha in Cyprus’ first division.
