Jason Levy has been hired as an assistant at Cal State Northridge.

Levy graduated from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo and was hoping to make the Matadors basketball team in 1991-92 under then head coach Pete Cassidy.

Levy didn’t make the team, but he continued his education at Cal State Northridge that resulted in a degree in 1993 in Leisure Studies & Recreation. Levy’s love of basketball led to a coaching career that has taken him to the Midwest, and back to the West Coast.

"This is something I have always thought about, but thought would never happen (his return to CSUN)," said Levy, who is the newest member of CSUN’s coaching staff after serving five seasons as an assistant at Loyola Marymount of the West Coast Conference. "For me to get a degree from Cal State Northridge and to be able to coach here is a great honor. I can’t express enough how excited I am to be able to work with Dr. Brandon Martin (Athletic Director), who I watched play at USC, and with coach Theus who I watched play for many years in the NBA. This is truly a dream come true."

"Jason Levy is in constant basketball mode," remarked CSUN head coach Reggie Theus. "Jason is a student of the game of basketball. He is constantly learning more about the game. He works hard as a recruiter, and he will be very instrumental in helping me on the court."

Levy played a major role in LMU’s many memorable wins over the last five seasons that included the Lions advancing to the semifinals at the 2013 West Coast Conference Championships for the second time in three years. LMU, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s are the only other WCC teams to reach the quarterfinals and beyond in each of the last five years.

"Jason provided energy and passion in the success who have enjoyed at Loyola Marymount over the years," said LMU head coach Max Good. "He will be missed."

Levy recruited ten WCC All-Conference selections in five seasons at LMU that included three 1,000-point scorers. Levy’s duties also included scheduling, scouting, working with post-players, and defensive strategy. LMU’s success included wins over several nationally-ranked teams including Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, UCLA and St. Louis. In 2011-12, the Lions defense ranked 20th in three-point field goal defense (.302). The Lions’ defense held 15 teams under 30 percent for the game from beyond the arc.

Prior to his assistant coaching duties at Loyola Marymount, Levy spent eight seasons at Cal State Fullerton where he helped the Titans win the Big West regular season (the first conference regular title since 1976) and conference tournament titles during the 2007-08 season that earned the CSF’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 32 years.

You name it. Jason Levy accomplished it while at Cal State Fullerton. His many assignments included recruiting as well as working with post-players, game preparation and coordinating the team’s competitive schedule. His intense schedule proved to be successful as the Titans boasted four straight winning seasons including 20 wins or more in three of the last five years while at CSF.

His recruiting efforts included some of the best players in Titan’s history including Bobby Brown, who is the Titans’ all-time leading scorer in addition to winning All-Big West Conference honors and Big West Freshman of the Year accolades.

Levy’s coaching success at Cal State Fullerton earned him recognition with a 2002 selection to the Top-20 of top assistants at a mid-major school by Rivals100Hoops.com. Levy was one of only two assistant coaches selected from schools west of the Rockies.

Levy also coached as an assistant at the University of Portland after serving the three prior years in the Big West Conference with two seasons (1994-95 and 1995-96) at Long Beach State under then head coach Seth Greenberg, and one year (1996-97) at UC Irvine under then head coach Rod Baker.

After graduating from CSUN, Levy began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant to Rudy Washington at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, before moving to Long Beach State. Levy also coached at the Double Pump Camps at Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1992-93.
