Following up on a rumor that HoopDirt.com posted back on August 21st (JUCO DIRT: College of Southern Idaho).  The College of Southern Idaho Men’s Basketball program announced the hiring of Shelby Lindley Monday. Lindley joins the Eagles after spending the past two seasons on Mark White’s East Mississippi Community College men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.Prior to that he served as the interim head men’s basketball coach at Central Wyoming College in 2012-13.
“Shelby has been a guy that I have always thought would be on my staff at some point,” said CSI Head Coach Jared Phay. “He has a lot of experience at all levels of college basketball and is very well respected in the business. Shelby is considered an up and coming star in the college basketball world. We are very fortunate to have him join our staff.”
During his two-year stint at EMCC, the Lions were a combined 38-15 overall and 17-6 in MACJC North Division play.  The 2013-14 EMCC squad recorded a fifth consecutive 20-win campaign and advanced to the MACJC State Tournament championship game, while last year’s club advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament for the second straight year.
Previously hired at CWC in the fall 2012 as an assistant men’s basketball coach, Lindley was elevated to the head coaching position just prior to the start of the season.  As one of the country’s youngest men’s basketball head coaches in the collegiate ranks at just 24 years of age at the time, Lindley responded admirably by guiding the 2012-13 Rustlers to a 23-7 record.  The mark ranked as CWC’s best record since the school reinstated the men’s basketball program.
Along with having two players earn NJCAA All-Region IX honors two years ago, the Lindley-led Central Wyoming squad also compiled a team grade point average of 3.2 with six sophomores graduating during the spring semester.
Prior to his one-year stint at Riverton-based CWC, Lindley spent the 2011-12 campaign as a graduate assistant coach on the men’s staff at Idaho State University of the Big Sky Conference.  For the year while working with ISU coaches Joe O’Brien and Deane Martin, Lindley handled the Bengals’ day-to-day responsibilities as director of basketball operations.
During the summer months in 2011 before heading to Idaho State, Lindley gained his first taste of coaching basketball at the junior college level by working alongside coaches Brandon Rinta and Steve Gosar at NJCAA powerhouse College of Southern Idaho.
A dual-sport athlete during his high school career and early collegiate days, Lindley began to explore his basketball coaching opportunities during his undergraduate years at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.  After playing baseball at NNU during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Lindley stayed on at his alma mater to serve as a volunteer assistant on veteran coach Tim Hills’ Crusaders basketball staff.
During the 2010-11 hoops season at Northwest Nazarene, Lindley assisted with basketball recruiting, film exchange, individual player workouts and team travel arrangements.  In addition, he helped work with all-conference standouts Paul Egwuonwu and Brian Barkoll on the 15-12 Crusaders’ squad that advanced to the semifinals of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament.
Lindley gained additional coaching experience on the hardwood during back-to-back summers by serving as the head coach for the U-16 team within the Idaho Select AAU program.
Before making the transition to basketball coaching, Lindley completed his baseball career as a one-year letterman for NCAA Division II member Northwest Nazarene.  He achieved most of his collegiate hardball success at the junior college level at Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mont.  As a sophomore for the Buccaneers, Lindley was a 2008 All-Mon-Dak Athletic Conference pitcher/utility player after going 6-2 on the mound and hitting .327 as an infielder.
With a bachelor’s degree in recreation and sports management from Northern Nazarene, Lindley originally hails from Wellsville, Utah and graduated from Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum, Utah.
