Northeastern University men’s basketball head coach Bill Coen announced Monday that Stonehill College head coach David McLaughlin has been named to the Huskies coaching staff.
McLaughlin, Stonehill’s all-time wins leader, joins Coen’s staff as associate head coach.
“I am thrilled to welcome David McLaughlin to our staff,” Coen said. “David possesses the character, knowledge, skill, and work ethic that we look for in members of our staff. He is an energetic recruiter and a talented coach whose Stonehill student-athletes achieved great success on the court and in the classroom. His record speaks for itself. He has an outstanding reputation and is universally respected throughout the basketball profession.”
McLaughlin, a two-time Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) and NABC Northeast District Coach of the Year, leaves Stonehill as the men’s basketball program’s all-time wins leader with 189 over nine seasons. He re-established the Skyhawks as a conference and regional power with a 189-99 (.656) overall record, including a 135-80 (.630) mark in NE-10 play. McLaughlin guided Stonehill to six 20 win seasons, including a program-record 27 victories during the team’s 2005-06 NCAA Division II national semifinal run; five NCAA tournament bids, including a school-record four-straight bids from 2008 to 2012; two east regional championships; the program’s first NE-10 tournament championship since 1989; and the NE-10 regular season title in 2009-10.
“Stonehill has been such an important part of my professional life, as well as my family life. To make a move required a unique opportunity for me, professionally, and for my family,” McLaughlin said. “Northeastern provided that unique opportunity. Bill Coen has done a remarkable job. I look forward to learning from him daily and to helping the program in any way that I can.”
McLaughlin oversaw a program that produced 14 All-NE-10 Conference performers, including three first-team selections. He also mentored a two-time Capital One Academic All-District honoree, as well as a player who received the NCAA Elite 89 Award for having the highest cumulative grade point average among the teams competing at the 2012 Division II Elite Eight.
He produced three-straight NE-10 Defensive Players of the Year to highlight the program’s regular place atop the NE-10 and NCAA Division II defensive charts. Three Skyhawks earned NE-10 All-Rookie Team status during his tenure.
McLaughlin was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College, graduating in 1997 with a degree in history and going on to earn his Master of Education from Suffolk in 1999. In May 2000, McLaughlin earned partial certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the NSCA.
Northeastern capped the 2012-13 season with its second NIT appearance in four years and third postseason berth in the last five years. The Huskies posted a 14-4 record in conference play to win their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association regular-season title. NU returns eight letter winners, including all-conference selections Quincy Ford and David Walker, for the 2013-14 season.
