Following up on some “dirt” that I posted back on May 3rd (Furman Dirt)…

The Furman men’s basketball program has added former Miami University assistant coach Trey Meyer as director of basketball operations, it was announced by first-year Paladin head coach Bob Richey.

“We are very excited about Trey joining our staff,” said Richey. “We set out to identify someone who could bring a lot of experience to that position with the potential to impact many areas of our program. Trey has coaching, recruiting, and operations experience while working the last five years at a very good academic institution. His relationships in Ohio, Tennessee and South Carolina will be beneficial for our program. He has also worked for John Cooper, whom I’ve known since I was a child and respect as much as anyone in our business. Lastly, Trey really aligns with our vision and values as a program, and we look forward to having him, Ashely, and Paisley in our family.”

Meyer recently completed his fifth season as an assistant coach in Oxford, Ohio, with the Miami University men’s basketball program after joining the RedHawks in July 2012. He will handle the Paladins’ team travel and summer camps, while also coordinating Furman basketball’s social media efforts, recruiting mail outs and Roundball Club.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work at one of the best universities in the country in Furman,” said Meyer. “This is a special place for student-athletes because of the tremendous opportunity to earn a prestigious degree while winning championships. I’ve known Coach Richey for the last few years and have always been impressed with his character, work ethic and passion for teaching basketball. I am extremely excited to join the Furman program, and I am looking forward to helping in any way possibly to continue to build upon the recent success.”

Meyer was a member of  head coach John Cooper’s staff at Tennessee State for three seasons, spending two years as a graduate assistant (2009-11) and one season as the director of operations (2011-12). He helped Tennessee State to a 20-13 record in 2011-12, the program’s first winning record since 1995-96 and the Tigers’ first 20-win season in 32 years. The team knocked off seventh-ranked Murray State on Feb. 9, 2012, 72-68, one of just two losses for the Racers, and defeated their first SEC opponent when the Tigers upset South Carolina, 64-63. TSU nearly earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament, falling to Murray State by two points in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament final. The Tigers did earn a bid to the 2012 CIT.

Cooper brought Meyer with him to Miami, where he was actively involved in the player development of the RedHawks. He also played an active part in recruiting and oversaw the development of the RedHawks’ wing players.

Meyer co-founded the Rising Coaches Elite Organization in 2010, which is designed to help Division I men’s basketball support staff members become assistant coaches. The organization boasts over 120 attendees the past few years while highlighting speakers from across the country.

Meyer played at Erskine College before transferring to Clemson, where he was a student assistant for three seasons. The Tigers won 72 games during his time at Clemson and made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Clemson in 2009 and a master’s degree in sports administration from Tennessee State in 2011. He is married to Ashley Meyer and the couple have a daughter, Paisley.
