Greg Miller, who has been an NAIA head coach, assistant coach and All-America player, has officially been named as the new head coach of men’s basketball at Trinity International University.
Miller was a two-time Honorable Mention NAIA All-America player (2012-13 and 2013-14) at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, where he later served as an assistant coach before assuming the head coaching position at Cincinnati Christian University in 2017. His 2018-19 squad at CCU finished 9-9 in one of the nation’s most competitive NAIA conferences.
“I have found Greg to be a very conscientious and hard-working coach, bringing new and innovative ideas to the staff and department,” said Chad Briscoe, director of athletics at Grace College. “Greg’s organization, leadership ability, and level of professionalism are evident with his success in recruiting quality, talented student-athletes who want a Christian college experience.”
TIU Director of Athletics Heather Logue said she looked for leadership traits within a Christian context as she sought the next Trojan head coach.
“We were looking for a candidate who could develop young men both on and off the court,” Logue said. “Greg brings experience in successful NAIA and NCCAA basketball programs. I’m thrilled to have Greg as part of our coaching staff.”
Miller replaces Todd Abernethy, who resigned in April after one season at TIU to become an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University, an NCAA Division I school in Boca Raton. Abernethy’s TIU team finished 15-15 with two all-conference players in 2018-19, starting the year ranked 21st in the NAIA Men’s Division II Coaches’ Preseason Top-25 Poll.
TIU ranks among the nation’s most improved college basketball programs at any level, rising from a 5-25 season as recently as 2013-14 to post four consecutive non-losing seasons, including a 30-6 mark in 2016-17.
The TIU Trojans played Miller’s Cincinnati Christian team in an early-season tournament last fall at Grace College, losing 105-97 to CCU in double overtime.
“I look forward to building on the recent success at Trinity International, and to continue investing into the lives of the men in our program,” Miller said. “I want each student-athlete to be challenged spiritually, academically, and athletically during their time with TIU. I am excited to build new traditions at the school and look forward to seeing our men compete at a high level and on the national stage.”
