OFFICIAL: New deal for Jones at LSU

The LSU Board of Supervisors approved a two-year contract extension and pay raise for LSU Coach Johnny Jones Friday at its October meeting.

Jones, who is entering his third season at LSU as head coach, has won 39 games in his first two years, the most by any Tiger head coach in their first two years in the 100-plus years of the program.

Jones also became just the second LSU head coach to take a team to post-season play in his first two years as head coach and the upcoming 2014-15 season marks Jones’ 20th year as a part of the LSU program – 1980-84 as a player; 1984-1997 as an assistant coach under Dale Brown; and, since April 2012 the head coach of the Tigers (4 years as a player, 13 as assistant coach, 3 as head coach).

The two-year extension means that Jones’ contract now extends through the 2019 season and his salary will go up $400,000 in the TV/Multimedia/Radio portion of his contact to bring his total compensation to $1.5 million. There is no change in any of the bonus agreements set up in the original contract and the buyouts remain as stated in the original contract.

“Johnny has our men’s basketball program heading in the right direction,” said LSU Vice-Chancellor/Director of Athletics Joe Alleva. “On the court, his up-tempo style and the energy in which his teams play is something that is appealing to our fans and is attractive to recruits. Off the floor, Johnny and his staff have done a great job of making academics and community involvement a priority. We look forward to having Coach Jones lead our men’s basketball team for many years to come.”

“I would like to thank Vice-Chancellor/Director of Athletics Joe Alleva, our President (Dr. F. King) Alexander and the Board of Supervisors for the confidence shown in me and our staff,” said Coach Jones on Friday. “This commitment by the University will allow us to continue to move the program forward as we strive for excellence on the court, in the classroom and the community. My family and I are very grateful.”
