Head men’s Basketball Coach, Dominick Savino, announced his decision to retire from his position today, March 24. A nationwide search to fill the position of head men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
Savino was named Adelphi University Head Men’s Basketball Coach on May 27, 2010 and led the Panthers to a record of 60-56 over the past four seasons, including leading Adelphi to a Northeast-10 Tournament Championship in his first year and a share of the regular season title in his second season.
An Adelphi assistant coach from 2007-2010, Savino was a part of three straight 20+ win seasons and acted as recruiting coordinator, while assisting with practice preparation, game day coaching and scouting. Savino brought almost 30 years of coaching experience to Adelphi. He spent 27 years at the high school level and had a one year stint as an associate head coach at Dowling College in 2005-06.
He has received numerous accolades, including being named Coach of the Year five times and earning Long Island Coach of the Year in 1991. He also captured An Eastern New York Championship in 1987 and helped Sachem to two Class-A Final Four’s.
Assistant Coach Richard Harkins, who has been part of the programs coaching staff for the past two seasons and was an All-MET guard for the Panthers from 2008 to 2012, will assume more leadership responsibilities as the national search for Savino’s replacement gets underway.
