Following-up on something that I first mentioned on Tuesday (D3 DIRT)…
David Sloan has officially been named as the head men’s basketball coach at D3 Bard College. Here’s the release from the school:
Bard College named David Sloan the school’s new Head Men’s Basketball Coach on Thursday. Sloan comes from Carnegie Mellon after five seasons as an assistant coach with the Tartans.
“It is an honor to be chosen to lead the Bard College Men’s Basketball program,” said Sloan. “I want to thank Dumaine Williams, David Lindholm, Stefanie Carrington, and the rest of the search committee for entrusting me with this opportunity. I am thrilled to work with our great student-athletes and elevate this program into a new era of Raptors Basketball.”
“David stood out early in our search process because of his enthusiasm for coaching but, also, because of his focus on building relationships,” said Stefanie Carrington, Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation. “That style of leadership aligns so well with the nature of the Bard community and I believe it will allow him to make an immediate impact on the program while also setting the stage for sustainable long term success.”
Sloan will arrive at Bard from Carnegie Mellon, where he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for four seasons and was elevated to associate head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2022. As the head recruiter for the Tartans, he was responsible for developing, organizing and maintaining a national recruiting plan, recruiting from 14 different states.
As the associate head coach in 2022-23, Sloan helped the Tartans qualify for its first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Playoffs since 2017. In his time with CMU, he mentored seven players to All- University Athletic Association (UAA) honors, including post player Trent Suddeth, who led the UAA in rebounding, guard Colin McNeil, who led the nation in assists per game, and R.J. Holmes, who was named UAA Sophomore Rookie of the Year, becoming the third Tartan to receive the UAA Rookie of the Year accolade.
Before Carnegie Mellon, Sloan was the assistant coach and head recruiter at Maine Maritime Academy. While at Maine Maritime, Sloan coached two 1,000-point scorers and the first player in program history to record a triple-double.
Before coaching the Mariners, he was an assistant coach at Boyertown Area High School in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. In addition, Sloan has coached at numerous camps, including Yale University, All-Academic Basketball Camps, the Tom Izzo Basketball Camp at Michigan State University, and more.
Sloan is a 2014 graduate of Alvernia University with a Bachelor of Science in athletic training. While at Alvernia, he was a four-year player for the Wolves basketball team and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He continued his education at Alvernia and was a graduate assistant athletic trainer before earning his master’s in business administration in May 2016.
