OFFICIAL: SUNYIT names Schoener head coach

Thanks to a great source for getting us out in front of this last week…

The SUNY Poly Athletic Department announced the hiring of Rob Schoener as the school’s new Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Schoener takes over for Kevin Grimmer, who is stepping down after 18 seasons with the team.

Grimmer, who has served the college in a variety of athletic administrative and coaching roles since 1984, continues to serve as the Director of Athletics for SUNY Poly.

"I’m extremely proud of the basketball program we’ve built here," said Grimmer. "My challenge of maintaining both coaching and administrative responsibilities has been very enjoyable and productive but it’s time to add a coach with a full emphasis on the team and our student-athletes."

Grimmer compiled almost 300 wins for Wildcat Basketball and has led both teams to frequent postseason appearances. In 2009-10 he lead the team to its second straight North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship and its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the team advanced to the Sweet 16. Grimmer guided the team to a program-best record of 26-5 and was rewarded with four different Coach of the Year awards.

Schoener comes to Marcy from SUNY Delhi, where he has been the Head Men’s Basketball Coach since 2007. At Delhi, which competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), he amassed a career record of 155-70, including a 114-22 record over the last four seasons. He twice led the Broncos to the Region III Championship in 2011 and 2012, and in 2012 the team placed third at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament.

Said Grimmer on the hiring: "Rob is a proven winner – he builds winning teams and molds successful student-athletes. Our Wildcat basketball program is in excellent hands."

Schoener has been named the Region III Division III Coach of the Year in each of his past four seasons at SUNY Delhi.

Prior to Delhi, Schoener served as an assistant coach for Monroe Community College from 2004 to 2007. In the 2006-07 season, Monroe was the national runner-up at the Division II NJCAA Tournament, the highest finish in school history.

Schoener is a graduate of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., where he was a team captain and helped lead the Cardinals to an 81-23 record in his four years as a player.

Upon his hiring, Schoener issued the following statement:

"It is a great honor to be chosen as the Head Men’s Basketball coach at SUNY Poly. I would like to thank Kevin Grimmer and the search committee for this tremendous opportunity. I am eager to get to work with our student-athletes toward achieving our goals in the classroom and on the court."
