I blogged about this last night when I first heard the rumor – it’s now official…Charlton Young has been fired after four seasons at Georgia Southern. Here’s the official statement from GSU:

Georgia Southern University will make a change in leadership of its men’s basketball program, Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein announced today.

The Eagles went 14-19 overall and 7-11 in the Southern Conference this season under Charlton "C.Y." Young. GSU won a SoCon Tournament game for the second consecutive year, topping Wofford 60-44 in the first round before falling 86-59 to top-seeded Davidson in the quarterfinals.

Young was 43-84 in four seasons at Georgia Southern, including a 26-46 mark in SoCon games. A Georgia Southern alum and member of the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame, Young took over a program facing a two-year probation period by the NCAA in 2009. After posting a 1-17 league mark in the 2010-11 season, Young engineered the second-best turnaround in SoCon history in 2011-12 as the Eagles went 12-6 and tied for second in the South.

"Charlton Young represents Georgia Southern with the utmost character. He has done a tremendous job with taking a program that had some trouble when he arrived and getting it to a level of respectability," said Kleinlein. "At the same time, I felt where we needed to go is beyond where we are at right now and that a change in leadership is necessary."

Young played for the Eagles from 1989-93, earning all-conference honors three times. He graduated as the school’s career leader in assists (570) and scored 1,517 career points, which ranks eighth on the GSU all-time list. Young was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

A national search for a replacement will begin immediately.
