Paul rejoins BU Men’s Basketball Staff

After spending the last two years at Yale University, Al Paul has rejoined the Boston University men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Joe Jones announced.

Paul previously spent three years with the Terriers, including the first as video coordinator in 2018-19 and then as director of operations during the 2019-20 Patriot League championship season. He accepted his first assistant coach position with the Bulldogs in the summer of 2021 and helped them win the Ivy League tournament title in 2022 along with the regular season title this past March.

“We are so excited to have Al back on our staff, as he has held multiple support staff roles in the past with us,” said Jones.  “It seems like a perfect transition for him to now become a full-time assistant coach. He is a genuine, intelligent and hardworking young coach who will make an immediate impact in our program.”

In his first year at BU, Paul oversaw all aspects of the video editing systems while also creating scouting reports, highlight films and playbooks.  In addition, he served as the point contact for the summer camps and executed community service initiatives, including the team’s partnership with Team IMPACT. As the director of operations, he coordinated all travel, including flights, hotels, buses and meals. He also helped with all apparel and equipment needs while balancing academic and athletic schedules for the entire program.

Paul joined the Terriers in the summer of 2018 after serving two years as an assistant coach at Putnam Science Academy and two years as a graduate assistant at Castleton University, where he earned his master’s degree in athletic leadership in 2016.

The Long Island, New York native, played two seasons at Wells College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2014 after completing his associates degree from SUNY Delhi. As a junior, he helped Wells reach the NEAC title game and would go on to be named to the school’s All-Decade Team (2010-19) in July of 2020. During his first two years of collegiate hoops at SUNY Delhi, Paul helped the Broncos win a pair of NJCAA Mountain Valley Conference Championships and finish third in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament.

Paul replaces Walt Corbean, who recently left after nine years on staff to take a position at Big East member Georgetown.
