John Payan has been hired as the GA at University of Dubuque. Payan is a 2018 graduate of St. Ambrose University, earning his B.A. in Sports Management and Marketing, with a minor in Leadership.
Payan has spent the past two years coaching at Cornell College for the Men’s basketball program. At Cornell, Payan handled scouting reports, recruiting, and individual player development, with one player earning first team all conference honors. Cornell had an 8 game win improvement from Payan’s first season to next and that included a berth in the Midwest Conference tournament. Payan also coached the scout team in practice, implemented scout offenses, and assisted with the Junior Varsity team.
Payan was a four-year Men’s Basketball player at St. Ambrose, earning conference tournament bids in 2015 and 2017.
Payan is the assistant director of TNT5 Basketball in Cedar Rapids and coach of the program’s 16U team. In addition, he is also the Lead Clinician for TNT5, in charge of handling workouts for over 400 athletes and overseeing 6 clinicians. In 2018, he was assistant director of Mercury Elite West Basketball in Sterling, Ill. Payan coached the AAU team Sauk Valley Magic in 2016-17.
A 2014 graduate of Sterling Newman High School, Payan gained honorable mention all-state honors his senior season. Payan helped lead Sterling Newman to the Three Rivers Conference championship and a berth in the Elite 8 in Class 2A during the 2013-14 season.
Payan is USA Basketball gold certified.
