Pearl River head basketball coach Chris Oney has named Landon Lewis, a former PRCC assistant coach, to round out his staff for the 2024-2025 season. Lewis joins the staff after spending the past two seasons as a graduate assistant on Jay Ladner’s Southern Miss men’s basketball staff.
“I am super excited to be back. I did not want to leave in 2023, but Coach Oney encouraged me to get my master’s, so I went to Southern Miss,” Lewis said. “I am happy to be back. The people of Poplarville and the college are very welcoming. And I look forward to working with and learning from coach Oney.”
Oney announced the addition on June 6.
“When he was here previously, he showed a lot of initiative and get up and go about his responsibilities,” PRCC head men’s basketball coach Chris Oney said. “With him going to Southern Miss and working with Jay Ladner for the last two years, that could only help his growth. He is more than ready and deserving of this position.”
COACHING CAREER
Lewis returns to Pearl River following a two-year stint as a graduate assistant with the Southern Miss men’s basketball program. During his two years at Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles compiled a 41-24 record. During the 2022-23 season, Southern Miss earned the Sun Belt regular season title and an NIT berth. The 25 wins were the highest season win total since the 2011-12 season.
Prior to Southern Miss, Lewis was an assistant coach on Pearl River’s 2021-2022 squad, which saw the Wildcats reach the NJCAA DI National Tournament following the 2022 Region 23 Tournament and MACCC Regular Season Championships.
EDUCATION
Lewis earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sports Management from Southern Miss in 2021 and 2024, respectively. Lewis graduated high school from West Lauderdale in Collinsville. He transferred to Southern Miss after earning an Associate’s degree from Copiah-Lincoln Community College in 2018.
