Pepperdine men’s basketball coach Marty Wilson announced two promotions on his staff today, as John Impelman has been elevated to assistant coach and Jon Pastorek will take over as director of operations.
"John Impelman has worked alongside of me for four of the last five years and has shown himself to be a tireless worker who is very loyal and committed," Wilson said. "He understands the entire culture that we are building here and has had both feet in since day one. He has always taken on more responsibility than he was given and has completed his tasks with great efficiency. He brings a great attitude that lifts up our basketball staff and team, and I am glad to say that he will continue to make our program better."
"In one year, Jon Pastorek really took on the challenges of his responsibilities in addition to being a full-time graduate student and completed them with a great sense of urgency. I know that he will continue to learn, grow and improve while helping our basketball program in many ways. He has been a perfect fit on our staff and I expect him to have a good future in the business."
Impelman will be in his fifth year working at Pepperdine in 2013-14. He was a graduate assistant in 2008-09 and 2009-10, then returned as the director of operations the past two years. He pulled double-duty during the 2011-12 season, also serving as an assistant coach when a spot opened up midway through the season.
"To say this promotion is exciting would be an understatement," Impelman said. "Coach Wilson has become my mentor in college basketball. I’ve worked under him all four years that I’ve been here, and I’m really happy that I’m able to continue to do that at an elevated level."
Pastorek joined the Waves’ staff last season as a graduate manager.
"I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity that Coach Wilson has given me to further my basketball career," Pastorek said. "I’m really thrilled to help out in whatever way I can for the upcoming season."
Impelman is a 2008 graduate of Occidental and was a four-year letterwinner on the Tigers’ men’s basketball team. He earned his master’s degree in American Studies from Pepperdine in December 2010. Impelman’s great-grandfather is the late UCLA coaching legend John Wooden and his father, Craig, was an assistant coach at Pepperdine for two seasons in the early 1980s.
Pastorek graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2011 and played two seasons for the Gauchos, both of which resulted in Big West Conference titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament. He was team captain as a senior. He spent his first two seasons at San Diego State before transferring.
