Pope names Fueger to coaching staff

Head coach Mark Pope has announced the hiring of assistant coach Cody Fueger to his men’s basketball staff at Utah Valley University. Fueger comes to UVU after two seasons as BYU’s Director of Operations.

“Cody Fueger is one of the great young coaches in America. He has coached in nearly every region of the country, has a deep and broad basketball knowledge and is meticulously organized,” said first-year UVU head coach Mark Pope. “Cody is the embodiment of the passion, hunger, and drive that defines great coaches. I am very fortunate to have him on my staff.”

The announcement of Fueger joining the coaching staff comes just three days after Pope’s first announced signing of Bonneville High School (Idaho Falls) guard Telly Davenport.

“Utah Valley University offers a great opportunity where there is a ton of potential, and to be able to continue working with Coach Pope is terrific,” Fueger said. “I’m thankful to Coach (Dave) Rose and the administration at BYU for supporting this chance for me to progress in my career. We look forward to building something special here at UVU.”

During Fueger’s time at BYU, the Cougars reached NCAA Tournament in each of his two seasons on staff.

Prior to his time in Provo, Fueger also spent time at Utah State (2012-13), UC Riverside (2011-12), Lousiana Tech (2007-11) and Utah (2002-07). He held the Director of Basketball Operations title at Utah State, UC Riverside and Louisiana Tech.

Fueger began his coaching career as Utah’s video coordinator and student assistant from 2002-07, which included a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2005. While at Utah he also worked with 2005 National Player of the Year and the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, Andrew Bogut.

At Louisiana Tech, Fueger’s responsibilities included film exchange, scouting video, on-campus recruiting and directing graduate assistants and team managers. While at UC Riverside he managed community outreach, practice coordination, film exchange, travel and the hiring and supervision of graduate assistants and student managers.

During his stint at Utah State, he served as the team’s travel coordinator and edited scout and game film. Fueger also assisted with the team’s international scouting, public and community relations and served as summer camp coordinator.

He graduated from the University of Utah in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Fueger also has a Master’s in parks, recreation and tourism-sports management from Utah, earned in 2007. A Milwaukee, Wisconsin native, he and his wife Danielle have two children, Isabella and Andrew.
