Portland State adds Harmon as Assistant Basketball Coach

Portland State Basketball Coach Jase Coburn has announced the addition of Mike Harmon to his coaching staff for the 2024-25 season. Harmon will be an assistant coach with the Vikings and begins work on Aug. 1.

Harmon was an assistant coach at Garden City (KS) Community College last season. Prior to that, he spent a year at Paris (TX) Junior College. Harmon is familiar with the northwest after working two years as a graduate assistant with Western Oregon. While at WOU, he helped the team make the semifinals of the 2021-2022 NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament.

“Mike was highly recommended from several people we know in the college basketball world, including Wes Pifer at Western Oregon,” said Coburn. “He also coached (current Viking) Qiant Myers at Western, so we had player background on Mike as well.”

Coburn expects Harmon to be an easy fit with the Viking program.

“The first thing that comes to mind is Mike will be here for the players. He will develop great relationships with them and help them progress in the game,” he said. “Mike brings tremendous energy to our program which is something we thrive on here. We are excited he has joined us.”

Harmon also has experience as an assistant coach at Monmouth University and the University of Texas – Permian Basin. In addition, he began a player development program in Houston from 2019-21 where he trained professional, college and elite high school athletes.

Harmon played professional basketball in the countries of Kosovo, Slovenia and Hungary. As a collegian, he had a four-year career playing basketball at Paris JC, The Masters University and Northeastern State University (NSU). During his senior season, Harmon averaged 19.2 points and shot 45 percent from three-point range. Harmon graduated from NSU in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree and from Western Oregon in 2023 with his master’s degree, both in criminal justice.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Harmon played his prep career at Morton Ranch High School in Katy, Texas.
