With Jim Crews having been fired at Army, a bunch of names are starting to surface as his possible replacements.
I have heard that Gene Marshall, Army’s deputy athletic director, will serve as the interim coach. Marshall coached at Ramapo College, and was the interim head coach for Army’s women’s program in 2005 when they were between coaches. He won’t be the permanent replacement however.
Current assistant Jim Platt was a Division I head coach at Charleston Southern and the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, but I don’t think he would get the job on a permanent basis either. The two interesting names are Army women’s coach Dave Magarity and The General Bob Knight. Magarity was the Head Coach at Marist and has done a great job with the women’s program at Army since taking over for the late Maggie Dixon.
Knight presents a very interesting situation at Army. Knight went 102-50 from 1965-1971 at Army (Mike Krzyzewski played for him during this period). His 902 DI wins are the most in NCAA history. If you are Army, how can you not give him some serious consideration?
I’ll keep you posted as I hear more. Obviously this has to be settled quickly – practice start in 3 weeks!!
