Purdue’s Painter earns 500th career victory

#2 Purdue (4-0) Head coach Matt Painter won his 500th career game with a 97-79 win over Akron on Sunday. Painter, in his 22nd season as a head coach (25 wins at Southern Illinois; 475 at Purdue), becomes the 16th active head coach with 500 wins. He achieved the milestone in the seventh-fewest games (Few, Calipari, Self, Pitino, Izzo, Bennett).

Right now, we have a really good team, and I’m trying to take in this win, not really the number of the win, but just take in the win. Wake up tomorrow and get ready for Memphis,” Painter said after Purdue’s win. “I would think it’s a big deal if it wasn’t me, but it is me, so I don’t think it’s a big deal. I’m yet to see a really good coach with bad players. It’s a player’s game.”
