Green Bay men’s basketball assistant coach Randall Herbst has been promoted to associate head coach, head coach Linc Darner announced.

“Randall is an incredibly valuable member of my coaching staff and is well deserving of this title,” said Darner. “He’s a tireless worker and tremendous recruiter. He has incredible knowledge of the game and has the ability to teach that to our players. Since day one, he has been a key part of our success and he’s a guy that I’ve leaned on throughout the course of my coaching career.”

Herbst has been key to the early success that the Phoenix has enjoyed under Darner, helping lead the team to the NCAA Tournament last season. He was also instrumental in landing the staff’s first recruiting class, which brought in talented freshman Trevor Anderson and Kameron Hankerson.

“It is an honor and I am very thankful for my new title of associate head coach. Coach Darner and I have known one another for a long time and it’s a privilege to work with and for him. This is an exciting time for Phoenix men’s basketball. We have a staff that is dedicated towards doing things the right way, all while continuing to win championships. I’m excited to be a part of that success each and every day,” said Herbst.

The native of Beaver Dam, Wis., where he was also inducted into the Hall of Fame, is in his second season on the Phoenix men’s basketball staff after being hired on in the spring of 2015. Herbst was also instrumental in the landing of JUCO transfers Charles Cooper and Jamar Hurdle, who turned in strong junior seasons last year.

Herbst has had coaching stops at Nebraska Omaha, University of Mary, Lincoln Memorial, Florida Southern, North Dakota, Waldorf Community College and North Iowa Area Community College. He’s being inducted into the Waldorf University Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 7.

The 2016-17 Green Bay men’s basketball team officially opens practice on Wednesday, Oct. 5 and hosts Indiana Tech for an exhibition contest on Nov. 1 at the Resch Center.
